A periodontist is a dental surgeon with a specialism in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gum disease. Periodontists may also perform restorative surgery, cosmetic dentistry and insert implants. Periodontists work most commonly in NHS hospitals and education. The required qualifications are a post-graduate certificate gained after professional training, culminating ultimately in membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons.
